UNDERSTANDING THE CONCEPTS OF BARAKAT AND KASRAT
There is no English word that can be used to translate the word Barakat. Barakat is from the Khabar system we discussed in our last article. Barakat means to get things done without means or to get much done with little means. In short, to get your work done or as we may put it day to day, quality and not quantity.
Today, unlike in the past, Muslims are constantly going after quantity (kasrat) and have little or no interest in quality (barakat). Why? To put it bluntly we have become sick. We have a sickness of greed and wanting more and more. Always trying to secure our future and forgetting our present. We forget a simple reality; that the past is but a memory; the future is but a mirage that may never become reality and that the present is what we have. Our biggest concern has become what we need for tomorrow. Barakat and finding barakat and the avenues of barakat is the real solution.
Yesterday, our parents and grandparents raised huge families, were happy, had time for us as children, but what did they earn and how much effort did they put into quantity? Even if they did not realise it, they were using means of barakat and this got their work done on little means. They never complained that they had no time (barakat in time), couples had love and understanding (muhabbat), large families ate supper together with laughter and talk (communication). Today we never have enough time, hardly spend quality time together and separations and divorce has reached epidemic levels.
So we need to understand what is different to find solutions because they did in fact have the solutions.
Nabi Alayhis Salaatu was salaam has informed us that building family ties increases rizq (earnings). Yesterday people ate together daily with extended families, visited each other regularly etc. Today we have a quick meal and sit on our computers and phones and for the most part don’t even eat together as a family. Today we never have time to visit family due to work and business commitments but yesterday everyone knew each family member closely. So we have neglected and forgotten a practice that draws barakat whereas yesterday people did these things which invited barakat. The result: they had barakat in earning and time and we do not no matter how hard we try. We may earn large sums of money (kasrat or quantity) but it is never enough for our happiness, and they had had little with barakat and this brought about love and was enough for their commitments.
Let us take some time to let this sink in before we continue on the subject insha Allah and discuss how to draw barakat using the methods taught by Allah and his Nabi Alayhis salaam.
